It was not until Montfort had been canonised in 1947 that the cause of Marie Louise of Jesus was introduced. After the examination of her writings, which ended on 9 May 1958, the examination of her virtues came to an end when Marie Louise was proclaimed Venerable on 10 July 1990. The examination of the miracles was made easy because the miracles were obvious and their many witnesses were all in agreement, which is not always the case. On 5 October 1991 five doctors recognized that the instantaneous cure of an Italian Sister, Sr. Rosa della Sapienzia at Saint-Laurent-sur-Sevre on 9 October

1944, could not be explained by medical science. On 7 March 1992 Pope John Paul II approved the miracle. Everything was set for the beatification.

It took place in Rome on Sunday 16 May 1993. Together with Sr. Marie Louise,

  • the following were beatified: a Swiss martyr, Maurice Tomay (1910-1949), who was a canon regular from Grand Saint-Bernard and was martyred in China; an Italian nun, Florida Cevoli (1685-1767), and a Polish nun, Kalab Jana Gabriel (1858-1926). Among the thousands of people attending the ceremony in St Peter’s Basilica in Rome were 500 or so Daughters of Wisdom, 50 Montfort priests and 50 Brothers of St Gabriel. The day before, in the Agostinianum Auditorium a forum had been held in which Sisters from all the Provinces had been able to share their lived experience. On Monday 17 May, Tuesday 18 May and Wednesday 19 May a triduum of thanksgiving was held in the church Saint Louis-des-Fran<;ais, the basilica of St Mary Major and St Louis-Marie’s:church.

In France celebrations were held in three places because of their connection with Sr. Marie-Louise: in Poitiers on 21 May, at La Rochelle on 22 May and at Saint-Laurent on Sunday 23 May. At the open-air Mass at Saint-Laurent Bishop Gamier of Lucon, who gave the homily, invited everyone “to praise God’s strange wisdom that turns everything upside down.”

At the end of the forum on 15 May the following message was addressed to the Daughters of Wisdom by the Brothers of St Gabriel:

“The Brothers of St Gabriel would like to express their gratitude to the Daughters of Wisdom for allowing them to participate fully in the celebrations of the beatification…

We acknowledge that Marie Louise of Jesus is the mother of the whole Montfortian family because of her faith which is part of their patrimony founded at Saint-Laurent in the most complete poverty.

“Sr. Marie-Louise invites us to collaborate with each other in the Montfortian family and to keep alive the family spirit she has bequeathed us. May we like her have a sense of the social and apostolic demands and with boldness, faith and generosity, meet the needs that nobody else thinks of meeting.

“And you, Daughters of Wisdom, may you walk in the footsteps of Sr. Marie Louise and be women full of hope in your own future, faithful women totally available to those the world neglects most, bold women of faith able to welcome the unknown and the new that the Spirit keeps creating. Finally, may you increasingly become Daughters of Wisdom who allow themselves to be, like Sr. Marie-Louise, lured by Jesus Christ, Eternal and Incarnate Wisdom.”
