WHERE OUR SUPERIORS GENERAL CAME FROM

Br. Augustin was a Breton born on 16 August 1797 at Baden (diocese ‘of Vannes), near Auray; it was there that in 1820 at the age of 23 and speaking Breton only, he knocked on the door of the novitiate founded by Fr. Deshayes.

Br. Simeon was born on 23. May 1806 at Beaupreau (diocese of Angers) in Anjou. He went to Saint-Laurent to improve his education with a view to becoming a school teacher; Fr. Deshayes suggested to him he became a Brother.

Br. Eugene-Marie was born on 23 December 1823 at Mondragon (diocese of Avignon) in Provence. The Brothers ran a school there for only seven years; he got to know them at evening classes and Sunday meetings; after much hesitation he joined the novitiate at Lorgues at the age of 18.

Br. Anastase was born on 7 November 1886 at Tourcoing in northern France; he got to know the Brothers who were running St Joseph’s School (they ran it for only nine years). He joined the distant juniorate at Saint-Laurent when he was 11.

As can be gathered from the above, most of our Superiors General got to know the Brothers in their native place, and three of them did so while attending their local school for a short time. Only one carne from Canada. The 11 French Superiors General came from various parts of France: from the centre (Br. Martial), the south-east (Br. Eugene-Marie), the north (Br. Anastase); the rest came from western France (One from the Nantes area, two from Brittany, two from Anjou, three from the Vendee).
